After the art directors and the editors review the sketches,
they chose the one featured below. A small copy of this sketch is
pasted
to a piece of illustration board and is quickly painted. This is
called a color comp.
This practice painting is where I do all my experimenting with color.
There is very little detail an takes about an hour.

The original sketch is enlarged on a copier to 20"x 20". This large
drawing is
taped on top of the illustration board that the final painting will
be done upon.
Illustration board is as thick as card board with a slightly textured
surface.
With an airbrush, a base color is applied to the board. Air brush
is controlled
spray painting. It also allows the paint to go down smooth and even.
